059 - Joanna Newsom - The Book of Right-On

I just like the fact that Joanna Newsom's voice can be heard on a 'dub/bass' track in 16 Bit's remix.

Whereas the bass of the remix allows Newsom's voice to act as playful, lighter counterpart, in this live version their more venomous, darker undertone is emphasised through her raw intonation:

037 - Jarc Prongo

- Often played by Ben Klock -

The melody really steals the show in this track. It whirrs and reels, culminating in a serious, intense break; driven by a fierce clap; supported by a class, minimal vocal. The drop is two-fold: the hi-hat is re-introduced, followed by the broken return of the stomping kick. In all, a focused and energetic tour de force of the late 90s.

030 - Submotion Orchestra

Ruby Wood - alongside Andreya Triana (see below) - is a fine female vocalist. Her voice floats above Tommy Evan's tight drums and that dubby  bass; the keyboard, sax and trumpet. Submotion lie somewhere between dub and jazz, having incorporated elements of both styles into their sound. The remix is decidedly more dub-infused than the original.

008 - Nathan Fake - The Sky Was Pink (James Holden Remix)

This truly is one of the greatest techno tracks ever - there's so much to it! I must have heard this track 100 times and yet I still hear it differently, notice aspects I didn't know existed. It broods and smoulders, it creates its own atmosphere. It stays fresh throughout due to some of the most subtle shifts and inclusions I know. I love the sound-set - each component compliments the next. It's outrageously long, at over 9 minutes. This adds to its epic character: one of my favourite aspects to it is the length of the bold outro - at three minutes long, it marches proudly on out as opposed to casually slipping away. But perhaps what's most impressive is that everything great about it comes from the remix, and not the original. I'd even go as far as to say the original is boring, something the remix is a far cry from.

003 - Caribou (Swim Remixes)

Swim got remixed.  Although not all efforts prove satisfactory (James Holden's particularly), there are a couple of artists who have really made the most of the opportunity, achieving that fine balance between original material and novel interpretation. Noteworthy about the first two tracks below is the treatment of the vocal lines - in the original versions, neither has a prominence such as they do in the remixes. Lastly, there's just enough of Sun in the third to make it a successful remix as well as a good tune.

001 - Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX (We're New Here)

This seems as good a place to start as any. Running is essentially Jamie XX's track with its slow, heavy beat; with Gil Scott playing the piano in Piano Player.
